Have you heard of forest bathing? I have, but only in vague terms. This NPR story talks about it in more detail and I encourage you to read it if this concept intrigues you. Forest bathing to me is just a fancier way of describing a walk in the woods, which I happened to doContinue reading “Forest bathing”

Food
In my family, a lot of talk revolves around food. I doubt we are much different from any other large family. The older we all get, the more we seem to talk and reminisce over food. This past weekend, my wife and I were able to spend time with extended family and we enjoyed someContinue reading “Food”
Menagerie
Welcome to the new year, all. New year, new start, including (hopefully) more regular posting on this blog. We are a family that loves animals, and we have a bit of a menagerie now: three dogs, two parakeets, and the most recent additions: two kittens. You guessed it, the kittens were Christmas presents for twoContinue reading “Menagerie”
Witness
Yesterday, we attended a cross country race invitational in which one of our children participated. The weather was nearly perfect, about 70 degrees Fahrenheit with a cool breeze and lots of sunshine. Our child finished eighth with a best finish and personal best time. It was great. What I really wanted to mention though isContinue reading “Witness”
This and that
It is nice to enjoy a long weekend with extended family whom we haven’t seen in more than two years. No drama, no frenetic drive to do this and that, just a time to visit and relax. Yesterday I downloaded the iOS 15 public beta as well as the watchOS 8 beta and began toContinue reading “This and that”
The vacation that wasn’t
My previous post was overly optimistic and positive. In reality, a week of vacation turned into a week of mostly work with a bit of vacation. Grump, grump, grump. In many ways this was because a controversy broke while I was away regarding copyright guidance I gave for the campus as a whole. (At theContinue reading “The vacation that wasn’t”
Vacation daze
With relatively short notice, we decided to head north for vacation for a week, and are now nicely installed in our favorite cabin on the shore of a large lake, enjoying mild temperatures in the daytime and cooler temperatures at night. I’m writing this with my iPad on my lap, sitting in a camping chair,Continue reading “Vacation daze”
A Mother’s Day picnic
We had beautiful weather yesterday for Mother’s Day, bright sunshine and cool temps. We decided to have a picnic at a spot we have long enjoyed over the years that is next to a gentle stream at a nearby nature preserve. The food was good and there was hardly anyone around. Very peaceful.
Another door closed
The wait for an answer is over, and unfortunately, I was not offered the job elsewhere. Another door closed. All along, I consistently prayed for God to make things clear, and he did, just not in the way I was prepared for. I am thankful for his loving kindness and tender mercy, yet feel extremelyContinue reading “Another door closed”
Still waiting
Although I haven’t written a blog post in a long while, it seems like a lot has happened since the last one, and it also seems like nothing has happened. I am still waiting on word about a new job possibility, for example. At the same time, events in my three non-family life areas—teaching graduateContinue reading “Still waiting”
